I have some parts I’m welding up that require the exterior (including welded areas) to maintain a #4 finish.
What abrasive can i use to blend the welds in?

I have done a little polishing but very little compared to some. here is a link from walter if you need linear lines in the finish https://www.walter.com/en_US/products/about-abrasives/linear-finishing

and here is one for circular https://www.walter.com/en_US/products/about-abrasives/circular-finishing

they have charts that list certain abrasives that yield a certain finish.
whether you buy walter or not, you can probably get enough info from the charts to get the proper abrasives

I showed the chart to my supervisors and they seemed very appreciative that I was interested enough to "ask around" and "look things up" to improve the quality of my parts. Not sure if the bar is low, or im the only one thats psyched to be there. Doesn't matter..I'm having a blast! I absolutely LOVE my new job!

OK! So my new job is going great! I've learned so much already. I'm now in on the joke about engineers no knowing weld symbols.

The climax of my first week was being assigned an apparently difficult set of pharmaceutical sanitary stainless machine covers. The one guy that knows how to do them has been out sick. My supervisor tells me "everyone else ef's them up...but you laid a nice bead on your test so here ya go". "These parts are a month behind and these guys are super picky so I don't care how long it takes...Just make them right so we can ship them."

No pressure...

When he said that only one guy knew how to make them pass he wasn't kidding. I took the opportunity to meet my coworkers by asking every single welder their advice on how to do a good job. Most told me I should ask the guy who wasn't there...but i did make friends with a couple "old timers" who were excited to talk shop with "the new guy" who "knew his s**t".

After half a day of gathering tools and information I got to work and started doing some test welds and eventually got dialed in.
I'd like to share what I've learned with anyone who may be interested. I hope this helps someone that comes across this and is looking for help.

Keys to Lamborghini: 93amps, 12 pulses/sec, 20% on time, 25% background. Tiny tack with 0.035 308L filler on open end only. Tip of electrode AS CLOSE AS HUMANLY POSSIBLE! Haul ass but don't outrun the puddle joining the two sides. Plenty of metal at the closed end of the corner to taper off.

I'm going to try those pulse settings. That's a lot higher frequency than I've used before. Thanks for the settings.

Since they get ground smooth, the higher frequency leaves less of a ripple pattern. Little hard to look at though.

Awesome post, Brian! That "L"-Shaped corner purge device looks pretty interesting. Did you make it or was it something that they made for that job? I have this strange affinity for those sort of shop-made devices and things along those lines. Your mind-set will take you far in this world.

One of the "old timers" hooked me up. He has a stash of puge blocks that he made over the years. We found one that fits fairly well and I was off to the races. That is another great tip from the podcast that has served me very well. Seek out and earn the respect of the "old timers".
