ive only used 75/25 gas for er70s6 but i would like to try spray with solid and cored wires . ive reserched this a bit and it seems 90/10 is good for spray but not the best for short circuit , thats what the internet says anyways. basically i dont want to be switching bottles back and forth and i dont want a bunch of bottles in my garage. would something like 85/15 be a good compromise for spray but still have good results with all position short circuit ?

when i said cored wires i meant metal core. e70c and stuff like that

I've used a work around at work (non code welding) by doing the old "Y valve" in some helium trick but with 75/25 and straight argon. Its a bit jankey I know, but it works.
Set up for spray and dial the gas until the arc sounds good. I found a setting of 25cfh Ar and 10-15cfh 75/25 works for me doing pulse spray with the miller intellex on a delta weld 350 running 250-300 amps.
When its time to short circuit...cut off the argon and set your gas per usual.

its just for home use but ya i didnt want to mess with addition bottles and Y valves and mixing. found old posts on forums that 85/15 was a decent middle of the road gas for spray and short circuit but figured i would ask here first before wasting time with it

Yeah, more convenient if you have argon on hand for TIG. I’m now interested in looking into a good “best of both worlds” gas. I’ll give the 85/15 a shot.

i cant imagine theres much price difference between 75/25 and 85/15 so im thinking theres no reason not to try it. my current bottle probly wont be empty for another week or so. if you try that gas before i do report back how it does

I never tried 85/15. I use 92/8 for spray right now. I think it would be worth a try

local norco ordered me some 85/15. hopefully have it next weekend. metal cored wire showed up though. just waiting on the norco gas. using slightly lower than recomended setting on the metal core with 75/25 appears to get it in globular mode. bacon sizzle sound all but disappears and it starts hissing.

well i was able to get a bottle of 85/15 and had a chance to mess around with it a bit tonight. hoping to do a bit more with it over the weekend. heres a run down of the equipment and what i was doing.
scrap pieces were 3/4" thick steel plate in a T position. machine is a fronius transsteel 2200. wire is .035 kiswell e70c metal core. per the manufacturer the wfs and volts were set in the middle of the range at 300 and 27.5. gas flow was about 30cfh.
it seemed to weld ok but i know next to nothing about metal core wire or spray transfer. i may try to lower the gas flow as well if it still welds fine. also ill switch the wire to er70s6 and do short circuit to be sure this gas is ok for that. but ya im thinking this gas may be a good do it all mix and its the same price as 75/25.
heres one of the welds. tomorow ill cut it in half to look at the nugget.
oh ya one more thing. doing spray with 1/2" ctwd got the nozzle and neck HOT. i wonder if it could burn up the gun without water cooling
